The Final Countdown

We are in countdown mode in my house – in 12 days (Oct 6th) we are shutting off our cable. We aren’t completely getting rid of our TVs – we will still have our DVDs that we can watch and our Wii to play. But the 1000 channels of absolute crap are gone!!! I am very excited about the whole thing.

When I was talking to the customer service rep about the changes we are making she said to me:

“I just don’t know what I would do at night if I didn’t have cable”

I told her:

“That’s exactly the problem, I can watch TV all night and not remember a thing that's happened, that is NOT a good thing!!”

We have discovered that when the TV is off, and remains off for long periods of time we get more done around the house, the boys are better behaved, we are more relaxed, we talk more, and so on. {I guess this isn't a ground breaking revelation, but a big one for us nonetheless}

So why not just keep it shut off, why bother disconnecting all together? Well that one is easy – we are not very disciplined and we are very lazy. It is so easy to just turn on the TV and forget that you have the rest of your life to accomplish. PLUS…this will save us over $70 a month!!!

So now we are counting down….6 days to cram in as much as possible, 6 days until there is no more SpongeBob or Wubzy. (That reminds me, the fact that my son threw a fit last night because he couldn’t watch Wow Wow Wubzy made me doubt my decision even less!!) 6 more nights until we have more time in the evening for imaginative play, for sewing and crafting, for reading, and most importantly, for hanging out together playing games and just enjoying each other…no distractions!!!

  1. We took our cable done to the basics...ABC, NBC, and CBS and deleted all of the extra stuff too. Not only have we saved a ton of money, but if and when the TV is on. we're actually all sitting together watching something instead of everybody scattered in different rooms of the house watching different things. After awhile, we really didn't miss much of anything.

  2. I so wish I could get rid of all the TVS. My family loves them and I hate them. Good for you. I think it is a huge waste of time.

  3. we're canceling cable too! you know with internet you dont really need it anymore! You can get almost all shows for free online. you buy a cord that seriously cost 14 bucks and can watch the shows on your tv. just connects your computer to tv. seriously... playhouse disney, cooking channel, any fox, cbs shows etc! then if you add netflix that costs like 12 bucks a month with their awesome new feature where you can do play now on so many shows and tv. there is hulu also. oh my there is so many things you can do. my sister doesnt have cable and she says she can find pretty much EVERY show free!

  6. Good for you! We've been meaning to do this for YEARS (I'm not a TV watcher but my DH is...and the kids somewhat are!) Maybe this time we'll actually do it...especially since the cost of cable is increasing here. :(
Don't doubt yourself! You can do it and everyone will adjust!

  7. What a great idea! Keep us posted on how it goes.

We have basic cable. I watch the news and an occasional show, but for the most part I don't watch.

You're going to have a wonderful time with your family!

  8. You have more will power than I do. I was actually thinking that we'd do the same since Chad doesn't watch TV much, but then he went an got an HD plasma and watches TV way more! Ugh. Oh well - at least it's not on all the time when Aidan's up.

  10. I so wish I could throw our TVs completely out. I get sucked in, and it's hard to get pulled away. If it were just me, I would forgoe TV all together. But since the hubby wants a say in the matter, the TV (and the cable) are sticking around for now :(

  11. Oh man I am not even going to tell you how much I pay for cable! I am seriously addicted to television! But I agree with you - I leave the tv off for the kids during the day and they PLAY so well. If the tv is on - they just sit like mummies petrified in front of it. My husband has every single tv on in this house when he is home - it drives me nuts! The only time I watch is after 10 pm when everyone is in bed - the bad thing is that I will stay up for 3 or 4 hours catching up on all my DVR recordings!

    good luck with this
