How Do You....The Groceries Edition (+Giveaway)

I actually love to go grocery shopping (as long as its by myself of course) - its like a game, find the best deals, the best promotions, the best coupons and see how much I can save (verse spend) each week.

Some of my favorite tricks are:
  • NEVER shop hungry!!  Even if this means picking up a quick snack on my way to shop (sometimes even at the D&D counter at Stop & Shop)
  • Plan my meals for the week based on the weekly flier
  • Take the time to match coupons to the flier
  • Stock up on meat when the sales are really good (by doing this I usually only buy meat about once a month - having a chest freezer really helps too)
  • DON'T just buy something simply because I have a coupon for it
  • Set a budget and STICK TO IT
  • Don't take the kids or husband if at all possible (love them dearly, and sometimes I just can't say no when they beg and cry for a special treat or a bag of chips)
  • I try to keep a stash of reusable bags in my trunk.  Not only are they more eco-friendly, but I also LOVE the fact that they hold more and are easier to carry
How do you handle grocery shopping?  Do you set a budget, carry a list?  Are coupons your friend?  Do you split your trip between multiple stores for better deals?  Inquiring minds want to know!!!

UPDATE:  Forgot to mention, this giveaway will end at midnight on Thursday - so hurry and get in your entries!!

    1. I really should be a better shopper. I usually go with a list of 10-15 must have items and then just pick up whatever else I think we might need as I go through the store. This leaves me with empty spots in my pantry sometimes because I don't put everything on the list! I also almost always have the kiddos with me when I am shopping, so my favorite thing to do is hit up the bakery for a free kids cookie:) It keeps my kiddos quiet {for about half of the trip anyway}!

    2. We always use reusable bags! It makes it MUCH easier to get the groceries to the third floor! We also plan our menu ahead of time so we know exactly what we need and what we don't! It saves us lots!

    3. I list what we need and match the items to coupons I have. Then I try to remember to actually take the list when I go shopping!

    4. I follow with Google Friend Connect.

    5. I shop once a week and refuse to go back for anything. I make do with what I have even if I have forgotten anything. It seems like the "oops I forgot .....trips" were tearing up my budget. I never take any member of my family because I always spend at least 30 dollars more if I do. LOL

    6. I am a coupon girl. If I have a coupon and it is on sale...I buy it. I love coupons.

    7. I use a couple of websites that match the coupons for me (I shop at Shaws up here) and never shop with kids or husband. My biggest money saver? I work next to Shaws and when I leave work at 7am- they have just marked the meat down. So I buy a great cut of meat for cheap and plan around that for dinner! That works out so well. We also avoid the 'American' way of eating... meat+potatoes+sides... And mix up our dinners. We might eat a fruit/cheese/bread mix for dinner. Or veggies and hummus and pita bread. It saves money and there really is no need to eat those standardized (and oversized) American meals.

    8. You and I could be shopping TWINS I tell you! We shop exactly the same and have the same techniques!

    9. You are so funny! It's like a sport for you! :) I must admit, I don't do the grocery shopping for our family. My husband does it all. I have an inexplicable anxiety over going to the grocery store. Just can't stand it. Thank goodness my husband doesn't mind it at all. There, that is my tip, send your husband instead! :)

    10. I love to cut my coupons and match them with sales of items that I want/need! Thanks so much for this wonderful giveaway! Hope, hoping to win!! :) purposedrivenlife4you at gmail dot com

    13. Shopping was easier when I was younger. It's just hubby and I now, but I still find the deals, match the coupons, send in for the rebates if any. We eat economically, and we have cut down on anything too expensive that we like to switch over to more healthy alternatives.

    14. I try to use coupons whenever possible. I also try to match up the coupons with what is on sale in 2 different stores each week. That way, I take advantage of both sales.
One of our local stores marks down meats too, which you can use that day or freeze. I buy them too!

    15. My purchases reflect what is on sale usually paired with coupons. I visit both local supermarkets and the green grocery to get the best deals out there. The warehouse club stores have never worked out to give me better prices on groceries.

    17. I shop at two grocery stores to get the best prices and I plan my meals based on what is on sale. Then I use as many coupons as I can.
